12th September – Suzhou

The next morning we wake up early to catch a train to Suzhou, some sort of local Venice. When we go to the station, we struggle to get tickets, we try to get some at the machine: impossible for foreigners as you need a Chinese ID, we try to get in the station: no tickets. Finally, we end up going outside the station to a weird ticket office with only one English speaking desk, where Chinese people go past you because they have a Chinese passport. after two people, Kwasi decides to stop them. We buy tickets for 9.30am and wait in a huge waiting room full of noisy Chinese people. If there’s one good thing about China is that their trains leave on time and arrive on time. The bad thing about trains is the stations, they are huge and not well labelled. It takes us 15 minutes to find our way out and then it is very difficult to figure out how to go into the centre. We spot a group of tourists and deuce to follow them, they are from Belgium and help us. We follow them for 15 minutes before we decide to do our own thing. We start with the Beisi Ta Pagoda, supposedly the tallest this side of the Yangtze River. Kwasi starts to worry for his camera again as now half of the photo is bright and the rest is dark. We use the rubbers again but the camera keeps doing it, we’ll check in Shanghai. After that we take a rickshaw to Ping Jiang Lu, a very cute Chinese street next to a canal. We stop there for lunch and visit the Garden of the Master of Nets later in the afternoon before walking back all the way to the station (about 2 hours). People here keep looking at Kwasi and taking photos of him. they lust have never seen a black person before! Kwasi actually gets quite annoyed about it now and stare back or hide. Back in Shanghai, we have donner at the hostel before taking s ataxi to the hyatt, again! this time we pay the fee and enjoy the view for a good hour, sipping beer (included in the entrance fee) and taking photos (a lot of photos).

On se lève tôt pour aller a la gare de Shanghai et tenter d’acheter des billets pour Suzhou, la Venise locale. C’est pas évident, on commence par aller aux guichets automatiques mais au moment de payer on se rend compte qu’il faut passer sa carte d’identité sur un le tuer, en gros que les Chinois peuvent faire ça. Après, on rentre dans la gare mais il faut un ticket, ce n’est pas la qu’ils les vendent. Au final, on se retrouve a marcher 500 mètres pour trouver une enfilade de guichets dont un parlant anglais. On fait la queue gentiment et on voit que des Chinois passent comma ça devant tout le monde. On en laisse passer deux mais au troisième Kwasi décide d’intervenir et comme il fait vraiment peur ils vont de mon cote de la queue et moi aussi je râle et ils me montrent qu’ils ont un passeport chinois, moi j’en ai un français et alors je fais la queue! Incroyable! On prend le train a 9h30 donc en fait c’était pas vraiment la peine de se lever si tôt. On arrive a Suzhou une heure plus tard et on galère pendant 15 minutes pour sortir de la gare et trouver la rue qui mène au centre historique avec les canaux et les jardins. A un moment, on voit un groupe de touristes donc on décide de les suivre et de leur demander si ils savent ou ils vont. C’est un groupe de belges, on va les suivre pendant 15 minutes a peu près. On arrive a la Pagode Beisi Ta, qui a plusieurs cours avec des cheminées d’encens. C’est pas mal mais sans plus, en plus l’appareil photo de Kwasi commence a faire des siennes et a prendre des photos mi claires mi obscures. On va devoir le repaper encore une fois, c’est pas bon signe. Après la pagode, on prend un cyclo pousse qui nous emmene a Ping Jiang Lu, une allée piétonne en bord de cancal avec des petites maisons de the, c’est très pittoresque. On s’y arrête pour déjeuner et puis après on marche longtemps jusqu’à un jardin, celui du Maitre des Filets. les jardins de Suzhou sont enregistres au Patrimoine Mondial de l’Unesco. Après le jardin on décide de remonter tout le centre de Suzhou a pieds jusqu’à la gare, ça nous prend presque 2 heures. On arrive a la gare avec une heure d’avance mais tant mieux on en a pleins les pieds. On repart a 17h30 pour Shanghai. De retour la-bas, on dine a l’auberge avant de returner au Vue bar dans le Hyatt. D’être fois on pair les frais d’entree mais ça vaut vraiment le coup pour la vue, c’est superbe: on voit a la fois Puxi avec le Bund et Pudong. On reste la une bonne heure a boire notre boisson incluse dans l’entree et a prendre des photos.
L’appareil de Kwasi continue a jouer des tours et ça n’arrange pas son humeur.
