12th April – 13-hour long bus journey from Los Antiguos to Bariloche

Another long journey lay ahead of us today, we took the last bus of the season to Bariloche. Very disappointed we didn’t see Cueva de las Manos but we are bound to come back again to Patagonia again and explore more so not that disappointed.

El Chalten is the bus company that has the monopoly on taking tourists or locals travelling along routa 40. Got picked up at hostel/guesthouse and taken to station where we started the long journey to Bariloche.

We stopped a few times along the way sometimes in deserted places where population could be 30 people and they have wi-fi. It’s crazy.

After 13hrs on the bus we arrived in Bariloche at night, around 8:20pm and luckily for us the bus dropped us in the centre so we walked to the our hostel called Below 41. It’s a very nice hotel and good atmosphere. I would definitely recommend it.

We had shared 6 empanadas that the hostel was cooking between us, chatted to a few people and slept.

Hey Julie, I love reading about fellow travelers taking the same routes I’m taking through South America. I’m trying to figure out how to get from Los Antiguos to Bariloche – Do you have any tips or details? Chalten Travel doesn’t have a bus from LA to BAR listed; how did you book your bus? Thanks so much in advance!

      Hi Allie
I have checked in our files and found that it was booked with Chalten Travel for A$385 and it was direct from Los Antiguos to Bariloche. We got the last bus of the year as they don’t do it during cold months. To be honest, the journey there was pretty boring and uncomfortable. We loved Argentina and Bariloche but the myth around Ruta 40 isn’t worth it. Let me know if you need any more info. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for the info! Good to know what to expect from Ruta 40. I guess I will have to try to find an alternative if possible. Thank you!
